Hot Gossip!
Thanksgiving came a week late on Gossip Girl, but better late then never, as they say. I personally was excited last Thursday when I received the “GG txts,” alas…
As predicted, the family holiday puts the fun in dysfunctional. The Van der Woodsens were dis invited from the Waldorf soirĂ©e. Then they are invited to the Humphrey’s, which is trouble in itself. Let the parental awkwardness ensue! But hey - Eric is finally back! Though I must question where he has been for the last 3 episodes and where his blonde hair went…
[Commercial comment - the new Old Navy commercial's song uses the same music as Ron Sexsmith's "Maybe This Christmas," from The OC Mix 3. I feel all festive every time I see it come on. And then fast forward because DVR is life.]
- Thanksgiving at the Archibald residence seemed like every pre-divorce holiday. Of course the father passes out because he took too many drugs. Of course the mother wants to pull the wool over her eyes. Blah, poor Nate.
- And I almost feel badly for Blair. Everything seems to go wrong in her life, concerning people closest to her.
- And apparently, she’s a closet eater too? And her mother is sickly encouraging it? With PIE?! Poor girl is unraveling at the seams.
- Then the whole song-or-horse thing with the parental love triangle is just weird and also awkward, which seems to be the prevailing theme for Thanksgiving in New York.
- Most importantly, why aren’t any of them at the damn parade?
Re: my comment earlier in this post about Eric’s hair — “Ignore my roots.” Ta-ha. This show is so delightfully post-modern. Because Josh Schwartz is a genius and I love him. However, his hair was all brown last year, as the flashbacks showed. I also noticed that both he and Blair’s dad are wearing the same sweater. Is that supposed to make us infer that Eric is gay? I haven’t read the books, but I sort of wanted him and Jenny to date.
Maybe this is the reason why Blair Waldorf is the smartest character on the show: “Mom, he’s living in Europe… with a man. You can’t be that surprised that he wants a divorce.”
And we end with the happy Humphrey family playing football in Prospect Park with Vanessa Carlton’s new single “Lolita Fairytale” playing. Next week’s episode looks super sexual and super intense. So much so, that no words or dialogue were necessary or involved. I guess the answer to “where is Chuck?” will also be answered.
